History

The origins of the Local Police lie in the surveillance and public order duties carried out by the Bailiffs and Field Guards. The latter were required because Benitachell was mainly devoted to irrigated crops, mostly Moscatell grapes.
The Bailiffs announced the Mayor's proclamations through the streets of the old village (town cryers), and enforced out the Mayor's mandates.

In the '70s, during the term of Mayor Miguel Catala Devesa, four agents were recruited, curiously all women, forming the basis of a modern local police force in Benitachell.

The Local Police proper was not created until 1990. Then the town had only 2,000 inhabitants, but, given the large spread of buildings and the proliferation of housing developments, three additional officers were authorised.

That is why the Local Police is a young and dynamic Force which is eager to excel.
